OK GO
There are concerts - and then there’s an OK Go concert, which feels less like a show and more like stepping inside a joy-powered kaleidoscope. On May 19 at The Regency Ballroom, the beloved indie-rock quartet turned the historic San Francisco venue into a vibrant, confetti-drenched playground of sound, surprise, and sincere connection.
From the surreal orchestral opener “Impulse Purchase” to the confetti explosion of “This Too Shall Pass,” the band wasted no time making it clear: this was going to be a night of maximalist magic and maximal heart. And they delivered, over and over.
The 90-minute set was stacked with fan favorites and deep cuts alike, including the driving guitar licks of “Get Over It”, the danceable optimism of “I Won’t Let You Down,” and an unexpectedly tender moment during “Shooting the Moon” performed entirely on handbells by the full band at the front of the stage.
Lead singer Damian Kulash, as charismatic as ever, bounced between ringmaster and storyteller, bantering with the crowd, diving into the pit, and even performing “This Is How It Ends” from a makeshift platform surrounded by fans under the Regency’s glittering lights. That moment bled beautifully into a snippet of “It’s Tough to Have a Crush,” a wink to longtime listeners.
Mid-set highlights included “Needing/Getting,” “Obsession,” and “Better Than This,” each backed by pulsing light columns and ever-present waves of confetti. A roaring run of “Do What You Want”, “Oh Lately It’s So Quiet,” and “Love” brought the energy to a boiling point before the crowd exploded once more to “Here It Goes Again”, still one of the most iconic alt-rock anthems of the 2000s.
But OK Go wasn’t done yet.
The encore opened with the soaring “A Stone Only Rolls Downhill”, followed by a beautifully bittersweet performance of “Bye Bye Baby.” The final track of the night, “The One Moment,” served as a perfect closer - a song about time, chance, and small decisions carrying weight, performed with full conviction and a downpour of light and sound.
In the end, OK Go reminded everyone why they’ve remained so beloved for so long. They're not just clever music video architects, they're live alchemists capable of turning even a theater show into a momentous, confetti-soaked celebration of joy and human connection. If you ever get the chance, Do go see them. Just prepare to leave with your heart full and your hair full of confetti.
